Russians began to prepare children for admission to universities in Turkey, China and the UAE

Over the month, the number of Russians wishing to enroll in foreign universities has grown tenfold compared to last year. Science, technology and IT are the most in demand among specializations

Among Russians in July, the demand for admission to foreign universities increased tenfold compared to 2021, Kommersant writes.

Although the list of the most popular specialties has not changed, the geography of foreign universities has expanded: educational institutions of countries where it is easier to fly and where it is easier to get a visa have been added to the most popular universities.

Because of this, Russian students have become increasingly interested in universities in China, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Peru and Portugal. “Where before the percentage of those leaving to study at higher educational institutions was small, now it has increased, probably five times,” said Irina Sledeva, CEO of AcademConsult, to the publication.

At the same time, sciences, technologies, IT and natural sciences remained the most popular specialties in foreign universities for 2023. At the same time, according to the interlocutors of Kommersant, future students for studying abroad may not have enough regular classes with a tutor, they have to go to special courses.

Russians are also interested in tutors for admission to domestic universities. Most often, schoolchildren are looking for teachers in English, mathematics, Russian language, physics and social science. According to the company “Repetitor.ru”, the cost of classes for many of them, as in the past year, is 500 – 4 thousand rubles per lesson, depending on the experience of the teacher and the goals of training. At the same time, the solvency of applicants and their families has decreased so much due to the crisis that there are also many who are not ready to pay even 500 rubles for a lesson.

Earlier it was reported that in the first half of 2022, the Russians reduced the cost of online education for their children. If a year ago the average check was 8,415 rubles, then at the end of the same period this year it amounted to 6,642 rubles, which experts attributed to the lifting of coronavirus restrictions.

In July, Russian universities also constantly recorded an increase in the number of foreign students. In five years, the number of incoming foreigners has grown by 64,000 people. In the 2017/18 academic year, 260 thousand foreign students studied in Russia, and in 2021/022 – already 324 thousand. The most popular form of education chosen by foreigners in Russia was the bachelor’s degree. Director of the Institute for the Development of Education at the Higher School of Economics Irina Abankina suggested that the drop in the number of foreign students in Russia due to the “special operation” in Ukraine “is not worth waiting for”: “Students from Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, and Ukraine have not come to us in recent years. And from the CIS countries, they are actively coming to us – from Tajikistan or Kazakhstan, moreover, they do not go to the capital’s universities, but, for example, to Barnaul, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Orenburg. This flow will not be reduced.”
